Sustainability Consultant for National Gallery New Wing Development

The National Gallery is seeking an experienced Sustainability Consultant to lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive sustainability strategy for a new building at its Trafalgar Square location in London. The project involves constructing a new building integrated with the existing Gallery estate in a sensitive urban, cultural and heritage environment. Key responsibilities include: • Leading sustainability strategy development and coordination across the entire project • Advising on operational energy, embodied carbon, Whole Life Carbon, and circular economy principles • Developing integrated sustainability strategies for both new construction and existing estate integration • Supporting planning approvals and environmental certifications (Whole Life Carbon assessments, Circular Economy Statements, BREEAM) • Providing guidance on sustainable demolition, retention, retrofit and adaptation of existing structures • Coordinating sustainability requirements across all project disciplines (architects, engineers, planners, cost consultants) • Advising on heritage-sensitive and constrained site considerations • Providing ongoing sustainability support from design through construction, handover and operation Ideal candidates will have proven experience in sustainability strategy for complex heritage and cultural projects, knowledge of UK planning and environmental certification standards, and the ability to manage multi-disciplinary coordination.
