    Brief

This project involves the energy-efficient renovation and expansion of the existing Energy Museum located at the Kraftwerk Mitte site in Dresden. The renovation aims to enhance the building's function as a museum. The new construction will include office spaces, a foyer with an event room, sanitary facilities, and a core access area. A forecourt will be created in front of the museum, featuring an outdoor staircase that connects the existing and new buildings. This staircase will lead to a planned grandstand, providing seating for spectators of open-air events. A stage is also planned for events in the forecourt, to be constructed in front of the new building. The existing building is situated on the Kraftwerk Mitte site in Dresden, bordered by Könneritzstraße and adjacent existing buildings KWM 20, 22, 24, and 28. The area is characterized by historic brick buildings from the late 1920s. Since its closure in 1994, the revitalization of the former heating power plant has focused on art and culture. The previously isolated massive building complex has been made publicly accessible. The existing building is listed as a cultural monument by the Office for Culture and Monument Protection. The former coal shed was built in 1898 and served as a garage and repair workshop for motor vehicles from 1918. After the heating power plant was decommissioned in the 1990s, it was transformed into a permanent exhibition space by the Dresden electricity, gas, water, and district heating supply company. The building complex consists of two parts: the existing building and an attached new building. Functionally, the museum will be located in the two-story existing building, while the three-story new building will serve as an event and office unit. Interventions in the solid structure of the existing building are to be minimized to preserve the valuable character of the industrial building.
