    Brief

The City of Carcassonne is planning to rehabilitate the forecourt of the former Carmelite convent as part of the Grand Site Operation (OGS). This area is a key link between Bastide Saint-Louis and the Cité. The city has acquired the convent building with the aim of redeveloping this site, restoring the building, and establishing the intercommunal tourism office there. Construction work is set to begin in February 2026. This contract pertains to preventive archaeological excavation that must be conducted prior to the extension of the convent building and the installation of utility networks. Key details of the excavation include: • The excavation area covers 210 m², divided into a 150 m² strip and three planting pits of 20 m² each. • The excavation will take place in an urban environment, focusing on the Middle Ages. • The contractor must hold the necessary qualifications for the Middle Ages period. • The scientific leader of the operation must have significant experience in preventive excavations of medieval occupations in urban contexts. • The fieldwork phase will last a minimum of 30 working days, excluding site preparation, although these details are indicative and do not preclude the scientific intervention project to be developed by the contractor for the project owner. • The contract includes a firm phase and an optional phase. • In addition to the project manager, deputy manager, and qualified technicians, the field team will include a surveyor. The post-excavation team must consist of specialists from various disciplines to conduct the required studies, including: - A geomorphologist to address the dynamics of the river in relation to the occupation of the left bank of the Aude. - A ceramicist to study medieval and protohistoric ceramics. - An archaeozoologist with expertise in historical periods. - Specialists in various paleoenvironmental disciplines (anthracology, carpology, malacology) to implement studies of the collected samples.
