HS2 Data Transmission Network

HS2 requires a Data Transmission Network (DTN) to provide critical network transport and central services for reliable train operations. The DTN must deliver: (1) a Critical network for safety-related connected subsystems; (2) a Protected network for non-safety subsystems; (3) a secure, geo-redundant external interface via a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that aggregates internet, cloud, and Network Rail connectivity; (4) central compute and servers with internal and external security protections; (5) a Master Clock System providing precise timing via Precision Time Protocol (PTP), Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE), and Network Time Protocol (NTP); and (6) supporting services including DHCP, DNS, AAA authentication, and Network Management System (NMS). Optical and electrical SFP connections will facilitate all required interconnectivity. This is a critical infrastructure project requiring expertise in railway network systems, cybersecurity, redundancy design, and precision timing protocols.
