    Brief

High voltage submarine cables generate electromagnetic fields (EMF) that extend beyond the cable itself due to current flow through their metallic conductors. Although these fields diminish rapidly with distance, typically reaching background levels within tens of meters, submarine cable circuits run continuously across the seafloor for hundreds of kilometers. With extensive new interconnector systems being installed or planned—such as the Eastern Green Link projects (1-4), which represent approximately 1,800 km of cable circuits—it is critical to understand and quantify the impact of anthropogenic EMF on seafloor organisms to ensure that the transition to net-zero energy does not cause ecological harm. This opportunity seeks research to study and assess benthic (seafloor) community responses to electrical stimuli from submarine cables, providing essential data to support sustainable offshore energy infrastructure development.
