Medical School Teaching Facilities Expansion and Refurbishment at Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital

Bangor University and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board are partnering to deliver the North Wales Medical School, a Welsh Government-funded initiative to expand medical education capacity in North Wales. This contract involves alterations and adaptations to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital to create a new medical training centre. The project will address the current fragmented layout and insufficient space of existing education facilities, which are currently undersized for the medical curriculum and positioned along a busy patient corridor to the Endoscopy Department. Proposed works include: a roof extension to provide additional teaching accommodation; refurbishment and improvement of existing education spaces; reconfiguration to enhance functionality and suitability for teaching and learning; and upgrades to meet the North Wales Medical School curriculum space requirements. All work must be planned and coordinated within a live hospital environment, complying with site rules, CDM regulations, and NHS Wales/BCUHB technical standards. Suppliers should note that strict coordination with Estates and ICT departments is required to manage outages and access, and careful planning is essential given the shared use of corridors by patients, staff, and carers. The completed scheme will significantly increase teaching capacity and provide an appropriately sized, modern education environment to support medical training delivery.
