    Brief

This research project aims to develop evidence-based guidance on emergency window repair procedures for passenger rolling stock. The deliverables include: (1) A comprehensive analysis of temporary repair methods (including film alternatives) for windows and doors on current passenger trains, identifying which methods work reliably and what factors affect their performance; (2) Clear operational requirements, including loading conditions temporary repairs must withstand, the likelihood of different methods meeting these conditions, and necessary operational restrictions such as speed limits and time limitations while repairs are in place; (3) Practical, accessible guidance for maintenance teams and supporting engineers to ensure temporary repairs are selected and applied consistently across all window mounting and glazing systems in current use; (4) Recommendations for rolling stock design teams on how window design affects the feasibility and reliability of temporary repairs; (5) Identification of remaining evidence gaps and high-level recommendations for targeted testing to address them. Suppliers should demonstrate expertise in rolling stock maintenance, window repair systems, materials testing, and technical guidance development.
