    Brief

This research project aims to create an evidence-based strategy for standardising Automatic Current Limitation (ACL) characteristics across all electric trains operating on Great Britain's rail network. The project will establish a clear target state based on BS EN 50388-1:2022 standards (without UKSNC, with Umin2 = 17.5 kV) and develop a practical roadmap for implementation. Key objectives include: (1) confirming the optimal target state for ACL harmonisation while accounting for system-wide impacts, quantifying benefits, costs, and risks; and (2) creating a detailed transition pathway that specifies which ACL modifications are technically feasible and economically justified for existing trains, defines requirements for new rolling stock, identifies the role of dual-capability trains, and establishes a realistic implementation timeline. This work will help the rail industry move towards standardised electrical characteristics, improving interoperability and operational efficiency across the GB network.
