West Gate Remedial Works at Fort Nelson

Hampshire County Council Property Services Department is seeking qualified contractors to undertake comprehensive remediation works to the West Gate at Fort Nelson. The project encompasses three main categories of work: Primary measures include dismantling and adjusting the left gate leaf to eliminate binding at the hinges, followed by full operational adjustment of both gate leaves. Secondary measures involve refurbishing four wheels and six hinges, aligning padlock mounting holes, installing new galvanised steel sockets for drop bolts, adding steel brackets to hold drop bolts in the open position, refurbishing and resetting arched steel runners in the road surface, installing steel vermin guards beneath the gates, and repainting all metalwork including rust treatment. Structural measures include raking out and re-pointing mortar joints on the piers, resetting loose bricks using lime mortar, removing vegetation and debris from coping stones, sealing valleys to prevent water ingress, and investigating and remediating a split keystone. Contractors should have experience in heritage gate restoration, metalworking, structural repairs, and lime mortar work.
