    Brief

The Environment Agency is seeking a contractor to deliver a research and development project from October 2026 to March 2027 to improve the regulation of microbial pollutants in groundwater. The project consists of three work packages: (1) conduct a Rapid Evidence Assessment examining the fate, transport and risks of microbial pollutants in subsurface environments; (2) develop guidance for undertaking qualitative groundwater risk assessments specific to microbial pollutants; and (3) provide recommendations on the feasibility and applicability of quantitative and semi-quantitative assessment approaches. Work can be delivered remotely with required virtual progress meetings with the Environment Agency team. Ideal candidates possess expertise in hydrogeology, groundwater risk assessment, environmental permitting, and/or microbial pollutant assessment. This is an excellent opportunity for environmental consultancies and research organizations specializing in water quality and subsurface contamination.
