    Brief

The UK faces increasing pressure on land use from housing development, Net Zero commitments, and nature conservation efforts. This may reduce land available for agricultural commodity production domestically, potentially shifting production overseas. However, there is currently no established method to predict where crops would be grown instead or assess the environmental consequences of this displacement. This opportunity seeks to develop a practical solution that helps guide land use policy decisions by providing a complete understanding of both domestic and international environmental implications. Project Aims: 1. Create an initial interim model that estimates where UK agricultural commodity production would relocate if a specified area of land ceased commodity production. The model must be based on transparent and clearly documented assumptions. 2. Calculate the environmental impacts (carbon, biodiversity, and other indicators) of production in the identified new locations, ideally aligned with the Global Environmental Impacts of Consumption (GEIC) indicator framework. Suppliers should have expertise in agricultural economics, land use modelling, supply chain analysis, and environmental impact assessment. The successful project will provide evidence-based insights to inform strategic land use decisions and policy development.
