    Brief

This call for proposals invites researchers to develop projects that investigate the emergence of multiple and competing centers in the Horn of Africa and its implications for the region's future. We are looking for three to five research projects that will enhance understanding of the dynamics in contested borderlands of Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia, as well as the broader Horn of Africa and Red Sea region. The research should address how these emerging centers influence conflict dynamics, with a focus on the following areas: 1. **Emergence and Evolution**: Investigate the factors driving the rise and fall of these centers. 2. **Economic Drivers**: Explore how changes in commodity chains, digital finance, and diaspora revenue affect these centers. 3. **Maritime and Security Dimensions**: Analyze the impact of maritime trade and regional security on these dynamics. 4. **Political and Social Implications**: Assess how these centers influence political relations and governance. Proposals do not need to cover all sub-questions but should engage with the main theme of how these centers affect conflict dynamics. Additionally, submissions should outline how the research can inform policy and program responses, promoting inclusive political settlements and sustainable conflict resolution. Funding of up to £120,000 is available for each project, depending on the research scope and methods. Applications are welcome from individuals and organizations.
