NHS Health Check Program

The NHS Health Check program is designed to reduce preventable early deaths by identifying and managing cardiovascular risk factors in individuals aged 40 to 74 who have no prior history of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In West Northamptonshire, there is a significant concern, with 73 out of every 100,000 individuals dying prematurely from CVD before the age of 75. According to the Health and Social Care Act 2012, local authorities are legally required to implement and oversee a local NHS Health Check program. Each local authority must provide NHS Health Checks to 100% of eligible individuals every five years, inviting 20% of the eligible population annually. In Northamptonshire, from 2024/2025 to 2028/29, approximately 247,499 individuals are eligible for an NHS Health Check, which means that around 49,500 checks should be offered each year. The Council aims for a 70% uptake of these checks, translating to about 34,650 checks completed annually. The Office of Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) anticipates a 66% uptake, resulting in approximately 27,417 checks performed each year.
