Brief

The Pickit project, developed by the GeMMe laboratory at the University of Liège, aims to integrate multiple sensors capable of extracting data from crushed waste fragments. This data is then analyzed by an artificial intelligence model, which classifies the fragments that are sorted by robotic arms. Initially, the system included a 3D sensor, an X-ray sensor, and an infrared sensor. A Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) system has been added. This technology goes beyond simple separation of elements (copper, zinc, aluminum, stainless steel, etc.) by also identifying alloys within the same material (different types of aluminum or stainless steel, for example). The GeMMe laboratory is developing two LIBS systems: 1- The first system, installed on the main sorting conveyor, positioned about one meter high, requires high laser power and a rapid firing frequency to analyze moving parts. 2- The second system, installed on a slower 'analytical' conveyor, will allow for deeper analysis of parts deemed uncertain by upstream sensors by firing more frequently at them or at areas of interest. This system will also help enrich our database to train more complex models. The two LIBS systems will consist of the following components, each subject to a specific lot: • Lot 1: Supply, installation, and commissioning of two high-frequency lasers • Lot 2: Supply, installation, and commissioning of two dynamic focusing galvanometers for the 3D LIBS system • Lot 3: Supply, installation, and commissioning of a spectrometry system for LIBS.
