    Brief

This opportunity seeks to conduct a comprehensive national assessment of two rare notchwort species: Gillmans notchwort (Mesoptychia gillmanii var. laxa) and fen notchwort (Mesoptychia rutheana). The project will review and reassess the current status and geographic distribution of both species, with particular focus on their historic presence in Norfolk and Cumbria. Work will include examination of herbarium specimens to establish historical records and compare them with current populations. This assessment is needed to clarify the taxonomic history of these species, which have undergone significant reclassification, and to inform conservation efforts. Successful applicants should have expertise in bryology (moss and liverwort studies), herbarium curation, taxonomic analysis, and field survey methods.
