Developing New Models for Biological Ocean Carbon Storage

This funding opportunity supports the development of innovative modelling approaches to understand how biological processes in the ocean affect carbon storage and CO2 absorption. The project will focus on improving our understanding of marine organisms' role in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and how organic carbon moves through ocean systems. This UK-US collaborative initiative will create improved representations of these biological processes for integration into global climate models, enabling scientists to make better predictions about future ocean carbon storage capacity and climate impacts. Funding is available up to £312,500 (covering 80% of full economic costs), with projects required to commence in January 2027. Applicants should have expertise in marine biology, oceanography, climate modelling, or related fields.
