    Brief

Cefas seeks a qualified supplier to process up to 52 macrofaunal samples collected from the Coquet to St Mary's Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) off the Northumberland coast during a May 2026 survey. The contract involves extracting and identifying benthic macroinvertebrates from sediment grab samples using NMBAQC guidelines, including enumeration, taxonomic identification to the lowest possible level, and wet weight biomass determination. Samples will be sieved on a 1.0mm mesh and classified to EUNIS and Marine Habitat Classification biotopes. The supplier must conduct internal quality assurance following NMBAQC protocols, deliver data in Excel format with WoRMS-validated species names, and accommodate independent QA audits of 10% of samples arranged by Cefas. All processing must comply with established marine biological standards, with notable findings (non-native species, unusual records) documented and reference specimens returned to Cefas' Lowestoft laboratory. An optional element includes data entry into Marine Recorder Online. Data ownership is shared between Cefas, Natural England, and NIFCA, with public release under the Open Government Licence. Equipment balances require current annual service certification.
