Metro to Washington Extension Project - Design and Construction Opportunities

Nexus, the Passenger Transport Executive for Tyne and Wear, is delivering the Metro to Washington project, a £900 million transformative infrastructure initiative to extend the Tyne and Wear Metro system by 13km. The project will connect existing stations at Pelaw and South Hylton through Washington, establishing three new stations at Follingsby, Washington North, and Washington South. This major capital programme will enhance regional connectivity, support economic growth by unlocking access to skilled employment opportunities, and deliver modern, clean, and accessible integrated transport infrastructure. The project is structured in three phases: Phase 1 (2023-2027) focuses on feasibility studies, surveys, outline designs, and value assessments; Phase 2 (2027-2030) covers planning permission, contractor procurement, and cost confirmation; and Phase 3 (2030 onwards) encompasses contract award, detailed design completion, and scheme delivery. Construction is indicatively planned to commence in 2030. Nexus is currently conducting preliminary market engagement to gather insights on procurement strategy and project development. Opportunities will emerge across detailed design services, civil engineering and structures, building services, electrical and mechanical systems, overhead line systems, and permanent way infrastructure. An Outline Business Case submission is planned for March 2027.
