Research into Smoke Control Safety Provisions in Apartment Buildings

This research opportunity aims to evaluate whether current smoke control requirements in Approved Document B (ADB) are fit for purpose and effectively protect residents in blocks of flats. The research will assess compliance with Building Regulations 2010 Schedule 1, Part B1 minimum requirements. This study is being conducted as part of a comprehensive review of ADB, informed by stakeholder workshops, a Call for Evidence, and guidance from the Building Advisory Committee (BAC). Suppliers should demonstrate expertise in fire safety research, building regulations analysis, and smoke control systems in residential multi-unit buildings. The findings will inform potential updates to guidance on smoke control provisions to ensure they remain appropriate and effective for modern apartment building design and safety standards.
