    Brief

Flag Fen, located near Peterborough, is a nationally significant Bronze Age archaeological site featuring a wooden post alignment and timber platform dating to around 1350-550 BCE. The site is protected as a scheduled monument and contains fragile organic remains, including wood and palaeoenvironmental deposits, that are currently degrading. Historic England has confirmed the urgent need for preservation through investigation. The Council is seeking a competent archaeological contractor to conduct targeted excavations of the westernmost section of the post alignment to recover and preserve evidence before it deteriorates further. The project requires: characterization of the wooden post alignment through systematic excavation; recording and sampling of horizontal and vertical wooden remains for technological and species analysis; collection of associated deposit samples to understand site use; wood samples for scientific dating (radiocarbon or dendrochronology); and samples for palaeoenvironmental analysis. The work must include substantial public participation opportunities, allowing local people to engage directly in all aspects of the excavation process. This is a time-sensitive project to salvage irreplaceable archaeological information from a nationally important Bronze Age site.
