Sustainable Drainage System Installation at St George's RC Primary School

St George's RC Primary School in Lemington, Newcastle, requires a Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) installation to reduce flooding risk. The school experiences repeated internal flooding during heavy storms due to its location on a steep slope with natural overland water flow toward the River Tyne. The existing private drainage system (roof drains, storm drains, and channel drains) is frequently overwhelmed, allowing surface water to enter buildings. The project will install SuDS features such as basins, swales, or rain gardens to intercept and temporarily store surface water before slowly releasing it into the existing drainage system, reducing flood risk while providing environmental and wellbeing benefits. Funding of up to 50% is available from the Department for Education, with the remaining 50% matched by the Northumbria Regional Flood & Coast Committee. Construction must occur during summer school holidays to minimize disruption. Contractors should have experience in SuDS design and installation, project management during school closures, and delivering features that provide environmental and community amenities.
