    Brief

Natural England is seeking support for an eDNA (environmental DNA) sampling survey to detect invasive marsh frogs in water bodies near Ickburgh, Norfolk. Marsh frogs pose a critical threat to the Critically Endangered native northern pool frog population through disease transmission, competition, and hybridisation. The native pool frog was reintroduced to Norfolk starting in 2005, with populations currently established at Thompson Common, approximately 12km from the suspected marsh frog incursion site. This survey will determine the geographic extent of marsh frog presence or absence across selected water bodies using eDNA sampling methodology, progressing from west to east to minimize disease risk to native populations. The survey outputs will include a spatial distribution map showing marsh frog locations to support Natural England and partner organizations in developing and implementing appropriate management and control strategies. This work supports the national contingency plan for invasive non-native animal incursions in England.
