    Brief

National Highways is exploring whether the Magnetic Main Flux Method (MMFM) can be used to detect internal corrosion, wire breaks, and deterioration in bridge cable systems across the UK's aging bridge infrastructure. This non-destructive testing technique needs to be evaluated for its effectiveness, reliability, and practical application on suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and prestressed/post-tensioned concrete structures. The research will examine whether MMFM can work effectively through various protective layers such as cement grout, galvanisation, coatings, HDPE sheathing, and wax, and whether it can provide quantitative measurements of corrosion and remaining cable strength. This is a preliminary market engagement process under the Procurement Act 2023 aimed at understanding if MMFM can be technically validated and adapted for UK environmental and operational conditions. This notice does not constitute a call for competition or commit National Highways to future procurement. Interested parties should be prepared to discuss technical expertise in non-destructive testing, bridge cable systems, and practical implementation in UK conditions.
