    Brief

The British Geological Survey (BGS), on behalf of the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD), is seeking a marine coring capability and suitable vessel to conduct scientific drilling and coring operations offshore southern North Sea (Netherlands or Denmark) for approximately 30 days between April and May 2027. This project aims to collect continuous sediment cores that serve as a geological record of the last 50 ice ages and interglacial periods spanning approximately 3.3 million years. The North Sea Basin experienced dramatic climate fluctuations between fully glacial and warmer-than-present conditions, making it ideal for understanding Europe's paleoclimate, past ecosystems, and large river system evolution. The research will examine depositional regime shifts, ecosystem changes, and biodiversity turnover driven by rapid climate variations, providing critical insights into how natural environments respond to climate change and informing our understanding of modern-day warming impacts. Suppliers should have proven offshore drilling expertise, appropriate marine coring equipment, and vessel availability for the specified timeframe and operational area.
