    Brief

The Met Office is seeking continued support from the University of Aberystwyth to maintain and improve critical space weather forecasting models developed under the SWIMMR programme. This involves ongoing maintenance, technical support, and incremental enhancements to two key capabilities: the CORTOM solar wind boundary model (which helps predict geomagnetic storm impacts on power grids and other sectors) and the ACME automated CME detection tool. The work supports the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre (MOSWOC) in delivering operational forecasting services and aligns with commitments made to the Department for Science and Technology. The University of Aberystwyth is uniquely positioned as the original developer to ensure these models remain reliable, performant, and integrated with operational requirements through September 2026 and beyond. This is part of the broader Research to Operations to Research (R2O2R) initiative to transition academic research into operational use.
