Refurbishment of Skerry of Ness and Hoxa Head Lighthouses

This civil refurbishment project covers two lighthouse stations in Orkney: Hoxa Head (land-based, accessible year-round) and Skerry of Ness (tidal station, 200m offshore). Work includes cleaning structures to remove lichen and marine growth, repairing GRP panels and metalwork, redecorating, replacing corroded fittings, and re-stringing fencing. All work is civil in nature with no electrical works; optics remain operational throughout. Hoxa Head features a 7m aluminum structure with solar panels; Skerry of Ness is a 10m concrete column requiring rope access at high tide. Contractors must hold IRATA rope access certification. Tender planned for mid-July 2026 with site work starting end of September 2026. Both stations lack welfare facilities.
