Evaluating the Wider Benefits of Agri-Environment Scheme Heritage Actions

This project seeks to establish a comprehensive evidence baseline on the multiple benefits delivered by agri-environment scheme (AES) heritage actions. The research will assess co-benefits across biodiversity, soil health, water quality, carbon sequestration, heritage preservation, landscape character, and public access and engagement. The project will evaluate how heritage actions contribute to Environmental Improvement Plan targets and calculate their wider value for money. A key deliverable is identifying evidence gaps and recommending further research priorities. Outputs include a scoping review of scientific literature and industry guidance, a detailed findings report, an accessible infographic or one-page briefing for non-technical audiences, and a stakeholder webinar. The work must commence in early July 2026 and be completed by mid-March 2027.
