Brief

Northumbrian Water Limited (NWL) is seeking suppliers to provide an RFID-based sample tracking solution to replace its current barcode system in laboratory operations. This market engagement opportunity begins with a Proof of Concept (PoC) at one laboratory site to evaluate the feasibility, operational benefits, and integration requirements of RFID technology before potential wider deployment. Key Requirements: • Assessment of infrastructure and technology needs for RFID implementation • Supply of RFID tags, RFID-enabled printing, fixed and handheld scanners, and software • Installation and configuration at one laboratory site • Integration definition with Thermo SampleManager Laboratory Information Management System • Support for testing sample receipt, transfer, tracking, and traceability processes • Recommendations for future implementation based on PoC outcomes Desired Future Capabilities: • Multi-site RFID label printing • Seamless integration with Thermo SampleManager • High-volume simultaneous scanning (minimum 500 bottles at fixed points) • Handheld scanning throughout facilities • Robust operation in laboratory environments including cold storage and areas with moisture/chemical exposure • Scalability for expansion to chain-of-custody, storage monitoring, inventory, and asset tracking Success will be measured by improved sample traceability, reduced label errors and manual data entry, faster sample processing, reliable system integration, strong security and performance, and scalability across multiple sites. Interested suppliers should submit expressions of interest with product literature, case studies, technical specifications, and relevant experience to danielle.ruddick@nwl.co.uk. Following this engagement phase, NWL will conduct a competitive procurement process.
