Specialist Community Perinatal Mental Health Service

The Mums Matter programme is a specialist mental health service for pregnant women and new mothers experiencing mild to moderate perinatal mental health difficulties. It addresses a significant gap in support, as data shows up to 20% of women experience perinatal mental health problems yet fewer than half receive adequate help. The service is delivered as a structured six-week community-based programme that combines CBT-informed approaches, mindfulness training, peer support, and self-guided learning. Practical support includes onsite childcare and family supporter sessions to improve accessibility and engagement. The programme has demonstrated strong outcomes, with approximately 79% of participants no longer meeting clinical thresholds for depression and 72% for anxiety, alongside improvements in wellbeing and social connection. Participants report increased confidence, reduced anxiety, and value the shared experience with others. The service aligns with NHS priorities for early intervention, prevention, and community-based care, offering a cost-effective solution that reduces demand on higher intensity services.
