Construction of New Schools in Weiden, Germany

The city of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate is planning to construct two new secondary schools (Hans and Sophie Scholl Secondary Schools) on plots 895 and 900 in Weiden. Currently, the site has existing secondary schools built in the 1970s. The school complex consists of three buildings: two three-story classroom wings connected by a two-story central building with a basement. The buildings are constructed in solid construction and are connected by corridors, centrally located on the property. In 2010, a standalone container facility was added to accommodate additional classrooms without connection to the main school building. The site also includes an existing building (a three-field sports hall and school swimming pool) connected to the school building by a corridor. The sports area was completely renovated between 2018 and 2021. Plot 900 contains a duplex that housed former caretaker apartments. Plot 895, which includes the secondary schools and the sports area, covers an area of 30,368 m², while plot 900 covers 990 m². The new secondary schools, including the buildings, playgrounds, and outdoor facilities (parking for cars, bicycles, etc.), will be located on plots 895 and 900, ensuring that a contiguous public area of at least 8,000 m² remains available for future use by the city of Weiden. The required sports areas are located on adjacent plots 3394 and 3407, so no outdoor sports areas can be accommodated on the construction site for the new secondary schools. In the existing and future secondary schools, boys will be accommodated in the Hans Scholl Secondary School and girls in the Sophie Scholl Secondary School. Currently, there are 16 classes in the Hans Scholl Secondary School and 20 classes in the Sophie Scholl Secondary School. The total usable area is approximately 16,000 m², of which about 6,000 m² is allocated to traffic and technical areas, with a total gross volume of all spaces amounting to approximately 57,000 m³. The total area requirement is estimated at 16,338 m² of gross floor area. The realization of the new secondary school construction must ensure that the ongoing school operation with the current class sizes is maintained. Therefore, appropriate construction phases and interim measures, such as temporary buildings for school use during the demolition/construction period of approximately 2.5 years, must be provided.
