Hydrogen Storage System for Research Vessel Coriolis

This procurement opportunity is for the acquisition of a metal hydride storage system (MHS) as part of the BordstromTech-RL II funding program. The project is supported by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and coordinated by NOW-GmbH. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon GmbH, a non-profit research institution, is leading this initiative, with funding contributions from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and four consortium states (Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, and Brandenburg). The MHS will be a key component of a hydrogen system laboratory (H2SL) on the research vessel Coriolis, which will also feature a diesel-electric propulsion system and battery. The MHS is designed for safe hydrogen storage on board, facilitating emissions-free operation under certain conditions. The project aims to explore various research questions related to the manufacturing and operational behavior of the storage system, particularly its thermal coupling with the fuel cell. The procurement is part of a broader initiative to advance research in material science, coastal, climate, and environmental research, as well as regenerative medicine.
