Brief

Transport for London (TfL) is seeking innovative solutions for an automated vehicle inspection system to assess the condition of trains during routine maintenance. The system should use video, thermal imaging, and acoustic monitoring to inspect both sides of trains, roofs, and underframes as they arrive at maintenance facilities. Key capabilities required: - Automated vehicle identification by painted numbers - Detection and classification of defects including overheating components (brake resistors, bearings, traction equipment, HVAC, brake blocks, wheelsets, motors, gearboxes), graffiti, broken windows, damaged or missing components, collector shoe damage, underframe damage, out-of-gauge equipment, wheel profile defects, wheel flats, and brake wear - Coverage of both single and multiple-unit train formations - Secure data capture, storage, and management with automated analytics using Machine Learning and/or Artificial Intelligence - Actionable reporting to maintenance personnel This phased procurement begins with concept design and development (Phase 1), followed by proof of concept installation at up to two London Underground maintenance depots (Phase 2), with potential fleet-wide rollout (Phase 3) subject to business approval and demonstrated benefits. TfL reserves the right to proceed with any combination of phases or none at all, with decision points at the end of each phase.
