    Brief

The Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy GmbH (HZB) is an independent scientific research center under the Helmholtz Association, located in Berlin-Adlershof and Wannsee. The electron storage ring BESSY II provides high-brilliance synchrotron radiation from the terahertz to the X-ray range. With its focus on VUV and soft X-ray radiation, BESSY II is ideal for analyzing energy materials and thin film systems. The further development of instruments and the development of a concept for a successor source (BESSY III) are among the most important tasks in the coming years. Our electron storage ring BESSY II records an average of 2,700 visits from guest scientists from 28 countries each year. Annually, 500 to 600 publications appear in scientific journals based on measurements at BESSY II and until the end of 2019 also on measurements at BER II. The upgrade program “Bessy II+”: This program enables further cutting-edge research at BESSY II and the testing of new concepts with a view to the successor source BESSY III. BESSY aims to become an operando synchrotron for the energy transition. BESSY II+ offers new experimental opportunities, especially for operando investigations, such as the operation of batteries or solar cells. In addition to the new operando capabilities, the BESSY II+ project also focuses on modernization and sustainability. Sustainability includes the use of waste heat from the BESSY II experimental hall. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are also increasingly integrated into many processes. As part of the modernization project, HZB has received additional funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). “Invest BESSY II+” includes the key investments for the project funded by the BMBF. This funding secures the development of new infrastructures, such as the SoTeXS instrument (Soft-to-Tender X-ray Spectroscopy). This is a comprehensive concept for metrological, multimodal experiments that can be used in battery research and in the research of batteries and materials for energy applications. A plan grating monochromator (PGM) including motors and mechanics is required for a new beamline called “NAP-LEEM-XPEEM” at the BESSY-II synchrotron radiation facility. This PGM unit will be equipped with a plane mirror and two plane gratings. The plan grating monochromator operates with collimated light in the spectral range of 90 eV to 2000 eV.
