    Brief

The existing ferry terminals are limited in usability and durability. Specifically, the wooden piles are damaged by shipworms, leading to material loss. Due to the state of damage, urgent replacement construction is necessary. In addition to material issues, the existing rigid gangway structure cannot accommodate the varying water levels in the Trave River. As a result, the constantly changing freeboard heights of the gangway to the water surface must be compensated by ship-specific boarding aids. This leads to usage restrictions and even the suspension of ferry operations during excessively high or low water levels. Therefore, the new gangway structure will be designed as a floating platform to ensure consistent boarding and disembarking conditions despite changing water levels. Furthermore, the current gangway is not suitable for larger ferries. The regular operation of a double-ended passenger ferry is currently not feasible, making it impossible to maintain the desired turnaround time during peak season.
