Renovation Project for Turku Cathedral

The project for the renovation of the interior of Turku Cathedral is now open for bids. It has been nearly 50 years since the last renovation of the cathedral. This project includes essential maintenance repairs and functional changes to support a diverse and inclusive worship life and gatherings. The goal is to create a welcoming and accessible sanctuary. Accessibility improvements will be made both in the churchyard and indoors. The functionality of the church hall and main choir will be enhanced while preserving the iconic view of the main aisle. New multi-purpose gathering spaces will be constructed in Ursula Chapel and the second floor of the sacristy. The project will involve area and interior construction work, including archaeological excavation or supervision, space modifications, and elevation. The renovation project plan will compile the foundations of the construction project for regulatory procedures and church decision-making. The plan will present the usage plan and describe the building and technical repairs. Design will continue through the general and detailed design phases, resulting in detailed construction plans. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, with the renovated church set to open for use during Advent 2028.
