    Brief

National Highways seeks a single supplier to design, validate, and supply precast concrete foundations that resolve the clash between Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRS) and drainage systems on England's strategic road network. The current challenge is that VRS foundations cannot be placed within filter drains due to capacity restrictions. The solution involves creating precast foundations that span filter drains while supporting VRS posts with greater spacing, reducing material use and maintenance requirements. Suppliers should develop: precast foundation designs that accommodate typical filter drain spans and variable VRS post spacings; prototypes tested to BS EN 1317 standards; installation and maintenance methodologies; and drainage impact modelling. Expected benefits include improved maintenance efficiency, enhanced safety, reduced carbon footprint, and fewer materials required for construction and maintenance activities.
