Brief

This project focuses on improving the durability of tunnel structures in the federal road network in Germany, specifically addressing the issue of chloride-induced corrosion in steel and prestressed concrete constructions. Currently, planning and construction costs dominate decision-making, often neglecting durability and lifecycle costs. Chloride-induced corrosion leads to significant damage, high maintenance costs, traffic disruptions, and reduced service life of tunnels, necessitating sustainable construction practices. The research aims to develop and evaluate strategies to enhance the durability of tunnels against chloride corrosion through two main approaches: using corrosion-resistant reinforcement to improve the resistance of tunnel linings and employing innovative coating systems to prevent chloride-laden water infiltration. A lifecycle approach will be adopted, considering planning, manufacturing, and operational costs to assess the sustainability and economic viability of these measures. The project aims to provide robust insights into reducing maintenance costs and extending maintenance intervals, contributing to the longevity of tunnel structures and minimizing environmental impacts through less frequent repairs. Additionally, it seeks to enhance the economic efficiency and long-term sustainability of national infrastructure, offering practical solutions and recommendations for future construction projects, while also aiming to adapt relevant regulations. The findings from BASt-Heft B173 will be taken into account. This research project will significantly contribute to optimizing tunnel structures by improving maintenance costs and intervals, extending the lifespan of structures, minimizing environmental burdens from infrequent necessary measures, establishing a foundation for a lifecycle approach in planning, construction, operation, and maintenance, providing concrete recommendations and solutions for future projects, and preparing the adaptation of regulations for more durable construction practices. These measures will contribute to the long-term economic efficiency and ecological sustainability of national infrastructure.
