Brief
The historic concert hall 'Die Glocke' in Bremen is one of Europe's most important concert venues. Built in the Expressionist style and connected architecturally to the Bremen Cathedral, it is a significant part of Bremen's old town and is located near UNESCO World Heritage sites. With a central location and a diverse music and cultural program, 'Die Glocke' plays a key role in the development of Bremen's city center, hosting around 350 events annually and attracting approximately 220,000 visitors each year. The concert hall faces structural, functional, and construction challenges after 30 years of intensive use since its last renovation. It must be adapted to meet legal and functional requirements in the coming years, including fire safety and energy efficiency upgrades, all while considering heritage protection. Additionally, adjustments are needed to meet the changing needs of event organizers, as the current setup does not allow for simultaneous use of the halls due to inadequate acoustic separation and problematic evacuation routes. The delivery situation is also hindered by space constraints and lack of transport routes, affecting operations. Currently, the concert hall primarily attracts a limited audience, particularly struggling to reach younger and more diverse groups. To modernize the venue and attract new visitors, a shift from a rental model to a director-led model is being considered. The need for structural and technical renewal, along with the goal of creating a more open atmosphere towards the public square, has prompted the necessary upgrades to be complemented by a forward-looking expansion, ensuring the concert hall remains attractive and sustainable in the long term. At the request of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, in cooperation with Glocke Veranstaltungs-GmbH, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag authorized funding of up to 40 million EUR for the renovation and development of the concert hall, managed by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. The construction project is planned to be completed by 2030.
