Market Research on Data Management in English Local Government

The Local Government Association (LGA) is seeking to explore opportunities to enhance the quality and management of key data within English local councils. The goal is to potentially create a national dataset that can be commercially available, similar to the existing model for addressing and streets data through GeoPlace, a joint venture between the LGA and Ordnance Survey. This initiative aims to establish a sustainable model where councils can earn income from their data, while ensuring strict control over its use, and the LGA also benefits financially from its involvement. We are interested in identifying what data councils currently hold that could be included in this model and whether any councils are already offering their data commercially. This research will help determine the feasibility of this business opportunity.
