Revamping the Permanent Exhibition at the German Maritime Museum in Wilhelmshaven

The German Maritime Museum (DMM) is undergoing a complete renovation from 2019 to 2027, with a key focus on redesigning its exhibition. Established in 1998 in a historic shipyard building, the museum has undergone several expansions but now requires a more effective visitor experience and adequate space for future exhibitions. An architectural competition is currently optimizing a design to expand the building with seminar rooms and a temporary exhibition area. The winning design will serve as the framework for the new permanent exhibition, integrating outdoor spaces and exhibition ships. A significant funding approval from the German government allows for a comprehensive approach to the exhibition, considering the museum building, outdoor areas, and ships as a cohesive unit. The museum aims to provide a unique combination of scientific presentation and hands-on experiences, particularly on its ships. The total budget for the redesign of the permanent exhibition is approximately 2.24 million euros (net), including around 84,000 euros (net) for the ships, with the new exhibition set to open in December 2027.
