Violence Against Women and Girls Street Safety Initiative

This project addresses Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) through a multi-faceted approach combining street-based performances, community training, and public communications. The opportunity seeks a theatre group to lead the development and delivery of performances that will raise awareness and promote safer public spaces. Key project components include: (1) Co-designed street performances developed with input from young women and girls through participatory workshops, informed by trauma-specialist consultation throughout delivery; (2) Bystander Intervention Training delivered to community members on recognizing and responding to inappropriate behaviours; (3) Coordinated communications campaign to amplify impact and reach. The project is grounded in evidence showing that over 75% of young women and girls avoid activities or alter behaviour due to fear of unwanted sexual attention, with research indicating 51% of girls aged 13-18 have experienced unwanted sexual comments. The theatre commission will manage all stages from research and development through to final evaluation, ensuring the work is inclusive, creative, practical, and trauma-informed.
