    Brief

The city of Bühl is planning the renovation of the Windeck Gymnasium located at Humboldtstraße 3. This project involves the refurbishment of the building section II from 1970, which includes the expansion of a three-sided escape balcony and the construction of a technical building. The open two-story entrance hall will connect various areas and components of the school, serving as a central space for students and visitors to navigate the building. A spacious seating area will allow the entrance hall to function as an auditorium for events, breaks, and meals. The roof above the auditorium will feature a wide-span wooden structure designed to allow natural light through skylights and to vent smoke in case of fire. Adjacent corridor areas will be designed for high-quality use with seating niches and natural lighting from a newly centralized courtyard, which combines two smaller existing courtyards into one large central courtyard. The design of the entrance hall and central courtyard will require extensive demolition and new construction measures, necessitating sensitive support and underpinning work. A fire wall will be constructed along axis 13, marking the boundary of the renovation area, opposite the existing building section I. The high flexibility in the auditorium and corridor areas will be achieved through the arrangement of new, externally located, three-sided escape balconies made of steel, which will serve as the primary escape route. The building will feature a vertical, perforated trapezoidal sheet metal and post-and-beam facade. The upper floor will primarily contain classrooms and the student café, while the ground floor will also have classrooms, additional rooms under the outdoor staircase, a parent meeting room, and a first aid room, all in close proximity to the main entrance. The building will be constructed with a vertical, perforated trapezoidal sheet metal and post-and-beam facade. The glass facade will consist of triple glazing with aluminum frames and opening wings serving as escape doors for the primary escape route. The interior of the renovation area will primarily feature three materials: wood, glass, and concrete. The building is constructed using solid concrete, meaning all structurally relevant elements are made of reinforced concrete: the internal walls for stabilization, internal columns for load-bearing, and the ceilings/floor slab/roof for spanning distances. The structural concept will be visible in most areas, executed as exposed concrete in public areas and corridors, contributing to both the structure's stability and the building's appearance. Glass will be used for natural lighting throughout the building. All rooms connected to the outer wing and the courtyard will have glazing integrated into the facade. Additionally, special areas like the auditorium and an internal corridor will receive natural light through skylights in the roof. The roof will be designed as a flat sloped roof with a 2% gradient insulation, sealed with bitumen, extensively greened to reduce rainwater runoff, and supplemented with a photovoltaic system. The building will be constructed to meet the KFW55 energy standard. Usable area: approximately 3,395 m², gross volume: approximately 24,735 m³.
