Intertidal Mudflats and Sandflats Survey for Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast Special Protection Area

The Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast Special Protection Area (SPA) in north-east England protects diverse coastal and estuarine habitats that support nationally and internationally important bird species, including breeding little tern, wintering red knot, breeding avocet, and breeding common tern. The estuary's intertidal mudflats, particularly at Seal Sands (the largest on England's east coast between Lindisfarne and the Humber), are critical feeding grounds for waders and other birds. However, ecological condition has recently declined due to opportunistic macroalgae growth, which may reduce food availability for key wader species. Additional intertidal mudflats and sandy beaches at Greatham Creek, North Tees Mudflat, North Gare Sands, and Bran Sands provide essential foraging and roosting habitat. We require a contractor to conduct a Phase 1 and Phase 2 biotope survey of these intertidal areas, including sediment sampling to assess infauna and contaminants. The contractor will produce a comprehensive report evaluating habitat condition and ecological value to inform future management and conservation of this protected site.
